What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of systematically improving your brand's visibility, accuracy, and favorability in AI-generated search results. It is the successor to SEO for the age of LLMs.
While SEO optimized for Google's PageRank algorithm, GEO optimizes for the citation algorithms of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini.
The GEO Framework
1. Discovery Layer: Are You Indexed?
Before optimizing for citations, ensure AI models can actually find and process your content:
- Crawlability: Allow AI web crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) in your robots.txt
- Structured Data: Implement comprehensive JSON-LD schemas
- Content Freshness: AI models weight recent content - maintain a regular publishing cadence
- Source Authority: Build citations in sources that AI models trust (Wikipedia, G2, Crunchbase, authoritative media)
2. Representation Layer: How Are You Described?
Once indexed, control how AI models characterize your brand:
- Entity Disambiguation: Ensure your brand name resolves to the correct entity
- Category Accuracy: Are you described in the right product category?
- Feature Attribution: Do AI responses accurately list your key capabilities?
- Competitive Positioning: How are you compared to alternatives?
3. Recommendation Layer: Are You Cited?
The ultimate goal - being recommended when buyers ask:
- Query Coverage: Which buyer prompts trigger your citation?
- Rank Position: Where do you appear in ordered lists?
- Share of Voice: What percentage of relevant queries cite you?
- Cross-Engine Consistency: Are you cited uniformly or only on specific engines?
